The Project Impact – AI as a Tool for Growth and Innovation

The "AI Literacy in SME" project delivers essential tools and insights to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) harness the power of AI. By addressing knowledge gaps and providing practical resources, the project ensures that employees, managers, and educators can confidently integrate AI into their work.

A key outcome of the project is a comprehensive report that explores the challenges SMEs face when adopting AI. It outlines current needs, requirements, and competence gaps in Artificial Intelligence (AI), primarily expressed by business representatives. It will identify key AI skills necessary for employees lacking deep ICT/AI/technical knowledge and explore adjustments to existing theoretical AI literacy models encompassing all relevant cognitive, emotional (including motivation and self-efficacy), critical, and organizational aspects specified by the business world. The individual dimensions as well as the organisational one will be elaborated and presented in the report The report will consider individual and organizational dimensions, including recommendations for SME managerial levels to foster effective communication and collaboration for embracing new technologies.

Building on the findings, the project introduces the AI Literacy Skills Framework, which defines the key competencies employees need to effectively work with AI. This framework translates complex AI concepts into clear, actionable skills that are relevant to SMEs. It also lays the foundation for structured AI training, ensuring that employees—especially those with no prior AI knowledge—can develop the confidence to use AI tools in their daily work. Additionally, the framework will outline the concept for the "AI Skill Scanner," (R4.1).

A comprehensive AI literacy curriculum will be developed, specifically tailored to meet the needs and challenges of staff without ICT/AI skills and managers in SMEs. The curriculum defines clear learning objectives and competencies aimed at developing essential AI skills, ensuring that employees at all levels can build a foundational understanding of AI concepts. This flexible framework allows SMEs to implement AI literacy training programs that are adaptable to their specific working environments and organizational requirements. By focusing on practical, real-world applications of AI, this curriculum equips employees with the knowledge to use AI tools effectively, regardless of their background.

A comprehensive set of ready-to-use teaching materials will be compiled for educators, trainers, and learners. These materials include a diverse range of resources such as multimedia content, presentations, case studies, and practical exercises. The focus is on engaging and interactive learning experiences, with materials designed to cater to different learning styles and preferences. Special emphasis is placed on hybrid and unplugged games, where concepts are reinforced through gamified learning experiences. These materials are freely accessible and provide a mix of digital tools, printed materials, and interactive formats to ensure effective AI education. The aim is to make the learning process both enjoyable and impactful.

A user-friendly eLibrary/eRepository will be established as a central hub for all AI literacy resources. This platform contains a wide range of materials, including curriculum modules, teaching resources, case studies, research articles, and tools. With an intuitive navigation system, the eLibrary offers open access to these resources, making them easily accessible to educators, trainers, and learners. This repository serves as an ongoing resource for those seeking to deepen their AI knowledge and develop their skills, supporting continuous learning and growth in SMEs.

The AI Skills Scanner is a digital tool designed to assess the AI literacy (AIL) skills of target group members. By conducting an initial assessment, the tool helps guide users to suitable training content based on their current knowledge level. The goal is to provide a personalized learning experience that matches each individual's needs, helping them to efficiently improve their AI skills.

The "AmI Fit" Digital Learning Platform will serve as a comprehensive resource hub for employees without ICT/AI expertise, as well as employers, managers in SMEs, and educators. The platform is designed to empower users to effectively integrate and utilize AI technology in the workplace. Key features of the platform include:

Introduction Videos: Dynamic and engaging videos that provide an overview of the platform's content and learning objectives. Hosted on the project's YouTube channel, these videos are intended to attract learners, enhance dissemination efforts, and guide users toward the platform’s resources.

Learning Content: A wide range of educational materials on topics such as foundational AI knowledge, ethical and legal considerations, emotional and motivational aspects of AI adoption, critical thinking, and human-AI interactions will be designed. Integrated Evaluation Quizzes allow learners to test their knowledge and assess their progress.

Interactive Role-Play Simulations: Learners can immerse themselves in practical scenarios involving human-AI interactions. These role-play simulations offer a hands-on learning experience, where users can develop their skills and knowledge by navigating real-world situations related to AI technology.

Open Badge Certification System: The platform includes a Certification System that awards Open Badges to learners as they complete different training modules. This feature encourages participation, fosters a sense of achievement, and motivates continued engagement with the platform.

Through this initiative, SME employees will gain the confidence and skills to use AI effectively, turning it into a valuable tool rather than an intimidating challenge. As a result, SMEs will be better positioned to integrate AI into their operations, streamline workflows, and drive innovation.

By strengthening AI literacy, the project not only enhances the digital competence of employees but also supports SMEs in navigating the challenges of digital transformation. It helps businesses stay competitive, adapt to technological advancements, and unlock new opportunities for growth.

In the long run, "AI Literacy in SME" ensures that AI is not just a tool for tech specialists but a resource that every employee can use to contribute to the success of their company. Through this approach, the project empowers SMEs to confidently embrace the future of work and fully participate in the digital economy.
